Winter 2010 Swim Lessons

Parent/Child (Ages 3 months to 6 years)

Shrimp(Parent/Child) Ages 6 mos-6 yrs – Emphasizing personal safety and water enjoyment. Great for those young ones who haven’t had a swimming lesson. Parent must accompany child in water at all times.

Almost 3 This class is to transition 2-1/2 to 6 year olds into regular swim lessons. Parent must be in the water for the 1st half of the session. Youngest age accepted will be 2-1/2 years.

Preschool (Ages 3,4 and 5)

Pike – Ages 3-5: For 3, 4, and 5 year olds who have had little or no exposure to the water. Through games and activities students will learn to blow bubbles and adjust to the weightlessness when in the water. Students must be able to cmpletely submerge and swim 5 feet unassisted on the front, back, and side to pass.

Eel – Ages 3-5: Students will build endurance through the use of flotation devices. Must swim 15ft unsupported to pass! Must have passed Pike to enroll or have Director’s permission

Starfish – Ages 3-5: Students start rhythmic breathing, arm movements and build endurance. Must swim 40yds unsupported on the front, back, and side to pass. Must have passed Eel to enroll or have Director’s permission

Youth Progressive Lessons (Ages 6 and up!)

Polliwog Ages 6 and up!: This calss is for children 6 years of age or older who are ready to continue their skills front the starfish level or for the child who has never had swimming lessons before. Must be 6 years of age or older to enroll or have Director’s permission

Guppy Ages 6 and up!: This class will spend most of its time mastering rhythmic breathing. Survival floating, treading water, back crawl and kneeling dives will be introduced. Students must be able to swim the length of the pool to pass. Must have passed Polliwog to enroll or have Director’s permission

Minnow Ages 6 and up!: This class strives to increase floating ability while perfecting the crawl stroke and increasing endurance. Students are introduced to breaststroke and elementary backstroke, as well as, lifesaving skills. Recommended to pass Guppy level before enrolling.

Fish Ages 6 and up!: Developing endurance and lifesaving skills are continued in this level. Concentration is on mastering the breaststroke and elementary backstroke. Other related skills include underwater swimming, surface dives and sidestroke. Butterfly is introduced at this level. Recommended to pass Minnow level before enrolling.

Flying Fish Ages 6 and up!: More endurance is gained with continued work on the back crawl, breaststroke, front crawl, elementary backstroke and sidestroke. Competitive butterfly taught at this level. Recommended to pass Fish level before enrolling

Shark Ages 6 and up!; Focus is on perfecting all strokes and building endurance. Front and back diving and racing turns need to be domonstrated! Trudgen crawl and over-arm sidestroke are introduced. Recommmended to pass Fish level before enrolling

Porpoise Open to all youth under 15 who have completed the Shark level. This is our Jr. Lifesaving course. Endurance will be continued and lifesaving skills will be perfected.

Please Note: All Swim lessons will have the same structure. All children will be introduced to the appropriate skills for their level along with basic lifesaving skills. Please keep in mind that there are separate course for lifesaving and diving, and these items will NOT be emphasized during regular swimming lessons. The only classes allowed to use the diving board durning regular class time are: Starfish, Minnow, Fish, Flying Fish, Shark, and Porpoise
